Lafayette County Lowers Property Tax Rate for 2025–2026

Lafayette County Board of Supervisors votes to lower property tax rates for 2025–2026, helping Oxford homeowners save more this year.

Homeowners across Lafayette County will see some welcome relief on their property tax bills this year. Following a county-wide property reassessment that raised home values, the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors voted to reduce the millage rate from 37.51 to 35.51 mills for the 2025–2026 fiscal year.

The Board’s decision helps offset the higher appraised property values and keeps the county compliant with Mississippi’s 10% cap on annual revenue growth from ad valorem taxes. The new budget also includes a $1,200 annual raise for all county employees.

Public safety remains the county’s largest expenditure, accounting for 36% of the budget and funding departments such as the sheriff’s office, fire services, and emergency management. Public works receives 27%, while general government operations make up 11%.

For 2025–2026, Lafayette County projects about $49.5 million in total revenue, with $33 million generated through property taxes. The Lafayette County School District kept its rate steady at 68.70 mills, while the City of Oxford will maintain a 32.65 mill rate and provide a 3% cost-of-living raise for city employees.
